Viennese coffee house culture – the art of coziness
We, the Viennese coffeehouse owners, look forward to welcoming many guests to the Vienna Coffeehouse Owners’ Ball 2026 at the Hofburg Vienna. Once again, the Hofburg will become the largest and most beautiful coffeehouse in the world, celebrating Viennese coffeehouse culture in all its diversity.
With the motto ‘Viennese coffee house culture – the art of cosiness’ celebrates the renowned artists and architects who created the distinctive interiors and textile designs in the coffee houses. Many of them had close ties to the Wiener Werkstätten and the Backhausen company. In 2026, we will be celebrating a series of anniversaries centred around these artists. We still encounter this textile art today.
An outstanding example is Café Sperl, where guests sit on a pattern dominated by baroque forms and stylised foliage, created exactly 100 years ago, in 1926, by painter and interior designer Reinhold Völkel. The design symbolises the fruitful collaboration between Backhausen and dozens of artists, including the protagonists of Viennese Modernism, and serves as the central motif of this year’s ball poster.
The Vienna Coffeehouse Owners Ball has always been unique thanks to its high-quality artistic design and elaborate decorations, its spectacular programme and enormous musical range, with numerous orchestras and bands performing in all the halls of the Hofburg Vienna. Under the artistic direction of Christof Cremer, a large number of Austrian and international singers, dancers, choreographers, musicians and artists will make the ball an extraordinary sensory experience for all guests. – in the service of Viennese coffee house culture.
We, the Viennese coffee house owners, invite our guests to experience this ball night in all its facets and create unforgettable memories.
With best wishes for a wonderful ball night,
KR Wolfgang Binder und Anna Karnitscher

Midnight interlude
From midnight in the ballroom
Tango5 & friends – Vocals: Ivana Ecetová – Musical direction Miloš Todorovski
Tango classics and a crossover with contemporary tango arrangements of well-known pop songs and works from classical music literature.
Tango5
Tango stands for the music of Astor Piazzolla, the 5 for the musicians, their very own style and their origins. Founded in 2021, the ensemble consists of both current and former members of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and established soloists from the classical and jazz scene. With tango as their common stage in Piazzolla’s original line-up (violin, bandoneon, (electric) guitar, piano and double bass), they sometimes create their programmes in close connection with the original tradition, and sometimes in a completely new, individual style!
The ensemble’s own arrangements and spontaneous improvisations make it truly unique; its tango is sometimes tinged with jazz or Balkan influences, with hints of Viennese music or a touch of bossa nova – just as the musicians’ backgrounds are very diverse and multicultural. The result is a musical mix of classical music from the Baroque to the 21st century, crossover and world music. After their debut concert at the Vienna Konzerthaus, Tango5 has played to full houses in Austria: their unbridled energy, closeness to the audience, alternating moderation by the musicians and their stylistic versatility make every Tango5 evening an experience.

The Ball Poster 2026
Christof Cremer, artistic director of the Vienna Coffeehouse Ball, designed the 2026 ball poster. The composition of the 2026 ball poster draws on various sources. The first source is a photo of Ketevan Papava, solo dancer with the Vienna State Ballet, taken by the talented young photographer Ashley Taylor. In this photo, she is enjoying a coffee from a golden coffee cup, dressed up for a ball, wearing a lavish ball gown and ball hairstyle. In the next image layer, she merges with the background image in the well-known fabric pattern (design no. 10124 for Backhausen) by Reinhold Völkel for Café Sperl on Gumpendorfer Straße in Vienna. The ball poster is thus a fusion of the ball and Viennese coffee house culture in its ideal form.
Christof Cremer: „The ball poster is the product of intensive teamwork. Designers, photographers, choreographers, stylists, illustrators and graphic artists worked together with the aim of creating a special kind of artistic eye-catcher for the Vienna Coffeehouse Ball. – I think they succeeded!
